Getting the yellow off a 13 yr old mount

A friend brought me this mount and I've looked through the archives and found different methods of cleaning one up. Most says to shampoo the deer and i did and it came cleaner than what it was. I then used some Simple Green and scrubbed the mount with little improvement as you can see the deer has a long way to go to get the yellow out. I was also reading that some said you can't get the yellow out do to the hairs being hollow. I was just wondering if anyone had any new methods on restoring a mount like this? I got to do some work on the eyes and nose and paint but that yellow color to the hairs is bothering me. Or should this be replaced with a new cape. Thanks Bob

You could try a product called "Taxidermist Magic", you can find it in the McKenzie catalog. I have some clients that purchased from me to freshen up there mounts. I have used on my own mounts with success. It is hard to see really how yellow the mount is.Good luck Pete

Looks like it is faded - the yellow is what is left of the orignal color of the cape. I'd do a remount.

X2 The yellow isn't ON the hair, it's IN the hair and no amount of soap (you used one more than sufficiently strong to remove external elements) is going to fix this one. Remount.

In reality, that cape is not nearly as sun bleached as many I see. I think that if you repainted the eyes and the nose, you've find that it has a few more good years in that hide if you can't find a fresh one.

Yup, it's not that bad.I would remount it though. I did one for a guy this year and went to drop it off and saw thw two he had hanging in the front room and said "wow, how did you manage to shoot 2 albino's". Come to find out they were so bleached out by the sun that they were pure white! Hung mine right in the same spot, sooo I'll go back in 5 years and he'll have another albino, in velvet lol. Oh well, cant tell the guy where he can hang his own deer!

I'm going to fix the eyes and paint like George said and I agree with him and that alone will make it look better for a couple more years. Worst case he wants a new cape.

If there is smoke on it yellowing it then the McKenzie mount cleaning crystals work better than I would have ever imagined they would.
