was wanting to mount a long horn steer, but was wondering when best time of year to take it?    and what is the best way to take him?  (kill)

If your gonna mount... 22 or 223 to the forehead... I like the smooth summer mounts on a longhorn.. but the winter ones look good too..  Basically any time from May thru Feb...

Unless you have an early spring..

I would drop him (if you can get close to him or get him in a chute) right in the back of the poll. about 1 inch back behind the horns.

I shot this one Nov 1st and here in Canada we would have had maybe a month of -0 degrees at night so he had good hair on him.I got him for competition only so I shot him behind the front shoulders (200gr bullet)because I didn't want no knife marks in the neck from bleeding him out.He tasted good too. I also just bought his companion steer as well which actually bigger than this guy but will wait til fall again.Be careful of summer hides. I was taking reference photos a few weeks ago on some other steers and they all had rub marks on them and you could see their skin under the hair.If your not in a hurry, I would wait.
