I have a customer that wants a laying down mount on a female steinbok. Does anybody have any ideas on where to find a form? Its measurments are extremly close to that of a male so I know I could make a male form work with a little altering. Any help would be appreciated.
  Thanks,
   Derrick.

If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

Derrick,

Search the catalogs ... that what any of us would do.  If you have to alter it ... alter it.  That is also what any of us would have to do.  Remember, the mannikins and headforms are tools ... nothing more.  They are there to be used, and altered in any way to make them fit the skin and the job at hand.  Search the catalogs for what you need and have at it.  Good luck to you!

John.

Would a dik dik be roughly the same structure? The measurments look to be the same. I am not afraid to alter. But I do not want to make a standing form into a laying down one.

A dikdik is not even close.

Personally I would buy a head form that is close and I would carve the body.  It is a pretty simple shape to carve even with out any thing but the skin for reference and most the time I will wrap legs (or part of the legs) for a small lying down mount. Another thing that will help is to carve the body just a little small........ and mix vermiculite in with your hide paste till it is about like a running peanut butter. use a thick layer of this hide paste on the carve form and you can sculpt and shape from the out side of the skin once you have it zipped up.

Here are a couple of photos of a bay duiker that I carved. It is a little rough but keep in mind I put much of the detail in with the vermiculite/ hide paste mix once it is mounted.

Also when there is not a form or a good choice of form  I will use the actual skull or at least the top of the skull and sculpt the rest in critter clay.

dxt,

A male Steinbok will work as most females tend to be larger in body size then the males.
