This evening, I was taking the kids fishing and my cell phone rang.  "Buck's Cell" was what it read.  "What going on?"  Bad news, Buck replied.  Prince passed away this evening.

Prince was Buck & Karla Jones' first whitetail on their 80 acre whitetail ranch in Duncan, OK.  He was bottle fed as a fawn and as gentle as the get.  He has roamed their property for over 12 years.  In my collection of reference photos, Prince is the subject of 95 percent of the shots.  It was sad, because I thought of how many hours I had spent photographing and studying this beautiful creature.  I went to visit Buck's whitetail farm three nights ago.  I photographed and studied two of the most magnificent beast you have ever seen.  These were his two 200+ class breeder bucks.  (I posted a photo earlier of a deer named Rambo checking his backtrail.)  Once I filled the camera up, I went over to visit my old friend Prince.  He was poor looking and arthritic.  I watched him struggle to get around his own private piece of the property.  In my mind,  I new it wouldn't be long before he was gone.

As I fished, I reflected a little about this one whitetail buck.  He actually coached me to the point I am know in my taxidermy career.  He opened my eyes to the numerous mistakes I was making on my whitetail mounts.  He got me started in the taxidermy reference business, and all I did was repay him with a few bags of animal crackers.  I would guess several hundred taxidermists have studied this one deer in some fashion or another.  Either from sets of my whitetail reference photos, seminars I have presented, articles / photos in Breakthrough Magazine, photos posted here on the taxidermy.net or by visiting Prince personally at Buck's.

Though, he was only a whitetail buck, he was the best instructor of whitetail taxidermy I have every met.

My condolences to Buck & Karla Jones this evening.

Hopefully, all my friends of the taxidermy.net will find these shots of Prince, as useful as I have over the last 12 years.  Study hard and enjoy.

These pics are FANTASTIC!   The close up with the squinty eyes and jaws to the side is my new favorite.
