Over the last couple of years my desire to learn about taxidermy history is stronger than my desire to do taxidermy. I have to thank John Janelli for that, every time I talk to him I learn something new.


I was very excited when I saw that this was being donated to our auction, I was set on winning it.

It is the death mask of Carl Aekely's Gorilla. The "Old Man" of Mikeno.

Unreal ... is nothing about this field sacred!  That is a death mask created by Carl Ethan Akeley of the "Old Man of Mikeno" the very Mountain Gorilla in fact, that convinced Carl Akeley that these magnificent creatures were worthy of protection.  The last Gorilla that Akeley would kill for his diorama, even though his party had permits to take another ten or so.  That's what this death mask is ... IT IS HISTORY!  OUR HISTORY!  Show some respect for Christsake!

Matt, you have quite a treasure there!  Keep it dear!

Yes John we know.  Lighten up.  I have the book "Kingdom Under Glass".  If you notice from some of my other posts I also had the complete Jonas Techniques.  I even have Devereux's books with personal notes addressed to me from Mr. Devereux himself.  Been at this as long as you have and love the history.  I didn't have those pictures of Carl Akeley with the desk mask but I do now and I Thank You for those.  Joe
