didnt see rug section so thought try here. what the best way to rug a porky? i got lifesize form i was going to cut head off of, but was wondering how to dry it out and putting some kind of backing before the felt? i had it salted but then i heard you can just mount like birds with borax. so i soaked it back up but looks like he is really greasey. thanks

take some degreasing agent and smear it on the inside of the porky...let it set for about an hour and then scrape it off the hide....rinse the skin in Dawn and water...towel dry, and let the skin dry/breathe to dry a bit...douse with DP or Borax....let sit overnight or for a couple of days if you like....shake off the borax/dp...and mount up!

if you are going to rug it you may want to consider tanning it first.

If you DP for a rug, your rug is gonna get hard like cardboard. But breaking a porky in to get him soft probably wont be any fun and most likely painful lol. ONCE YOU THINK YOU HAVE THAT PORKY DEGREASED, DEGREASE HIM AGAIN AND THEN ONCE MORE FOR CERTENDY, they are greaser then a coon lol. good luck

you'll know when he is no longer greasy....when he no longer has a "yeller" belly (from the inside)

well, when the guy brought it to me it was just going to be lifesize but after i had it skinned, i had it spread out and sent him a picture and said porky rug? jokingly. then he was all excited and was like yeah. that be cool and different. so yesterday when fittin g form for lifesize it was all off. body too short and legs to short. so i figure what the heck we can try rug.  it still has alot of quills but lost most of big ones in butt area. seeing how he blew big hole there when he shot him.

Best bet is to go with Tanning the hide.

HQ Tan from Head Quarters Taxidermy Supply Is Great! I have used it quite a few time, and after the tanning and drying phase I have taken the hide and broken the hide over a corner of a table within minutes I had a VERY Soft Hide. If you don't want to do that Send it off to a Tannery, But for a rug, best bet is for you to have a soft flexible hide

Problem is Hoss you have to be careful witch tannery you send them out to cause porkies can't be tumbled or he'll come back quill less and look like one of them hair less cats lmao. You really should get that DP thing out of your mind and tan it for a rug. Porkies are very thin skinned animals and are not very hard to tan.

I did a life size with custom body out of excelcier, cast the head with alginate. made a bond slip.   I shaved it with wire brush "with the quils"  de greased with kemsal and dawn.  borax it up and mounted it up  came out great.
