I tried to place my call. His phone is busy. Guess he doesn't have call waiting. Perhaps some others are talking to him. I'll try again later.

Just to clarify, the phone call from the county official in Missouri, and the action that JJ, the NTA and Steve Wolk took happened prior to this post being written here in the forums. I was just told that it had occurred once this was posted initially, and then shared here so youd all know. Its still good news regardless of the timing. Id still go to the people in charge, if it were me, just for clarification and to cover my tail.
While I myself wouldnt call the guy, if you decide its what you want to do, Id seriously consider talking decent with him and maybe offering him in to what we do, rather than alienate him with taunting and ridicule, which is basically where he already has been. The mob mentality is not our best foot forward. Its not my call, I only moderate IN the forums, but Im just saying...

Point taken Bill. Sounds like it's been handled already anyway. Someone just shared with me the e-mail correspondences and I'd have to say that the Missouri people along with the NTA have it ALL under control. I think the letters might serve well if shared here for everyone to see. I know it cast a nice light on the NTA for me. At least upon JJ and Steve Wolk anyway.

The guy was using zoning laws as a way to say that we as dermists use toxic chemicals like embombing fluids in our daily work and therefore must be located in a commercial zoned area. JJ, Steve Wolk and the Missouri people showed the county officials a WASCO Catalog and that pretty much ended his case.

The town ordinances or zoning law or something from Missouri was at question, due to its language, which put taxidermists in the same category as mortuaries. Someone has been phoning periodically to report folks who are performing taxidermy from their homes, or anything not described as a commercial location, and describing hazardous chemicals and materials harmful to others as the reason. Those who got involved educated the official as to what we really do, and how we do it, and describing taxidermists as belonging in a category similar to a beauty salon, etc.
I believe as it stands, those practicing taxidermy need paper from the state to handle the specimens, but once they have that paper, they must be conducting taxidermy in a commercial location, or pay a fee to get a variance that is reviewed and either accepted or denied. If it were a simple case of concerned local residents contacting a town official about someone in their area with violation or health concerns, thats one thing. But for one taxidermist to systematically report all others is...well, you see what it is.

Let's not forget what this whole thread started out as. Someone's way of handling and trying to get rid of the competition and Part timers. I am a full time taxidermist who deals with this problem every year. I try to take care of the problem by doing better work than anyone around, offering good service and turnaround, all at a price I consider profitable. This individual may have handle things differently than I would. Superdave on this Forum is less than 15 miles from me in rural Missouri. We share the same customer base. We are good friends and help each other out frequntly. In our rural area, everyone has a brother in law that does taxidermy. All part timers start out undercharging for their work. Some, as they get better see that they can raise prices. Others don't and soon fade away. It is something that you have to deal with if you are Full Time, every year. I quit worrying about them and just try to take care of myself.

Guys I just talked to Paul and let him know of all the people he's pissing off. Like I said before I've known him for years and do not have a problem with him. What he is doing is saying that it is illegal to run a business out of your home in certain counties in Missouri. He is abiding by the law and thinks every one else should also. I do not agree with the way he is handling this but that is his business not mine. I do not worry about parttimers myself. I teach this business and have trained many people in my area. If they can get my customers by charging less I do not want those customers anyway. You all can call him he'll talk with you. I cant be live this has gotten so out of control. Take care Bruce Owens

"I won't even get into why you should never use a "out of the garage" taxidermist."
It is apparent from his website that he has a beef with home based taxidermists....not that he wants folks to follow the law. If he were concerned about the law, he would be reporting non-taxidermy businesses as well. Plain and simple, he is trying to shut his competition down. Contrary to his belief, there is world-class taxidermy being produced in some "garage" shops and p-poor work being produced in some commercial shops. The location has nothing to do with the quality of the work or the integrity of the taxidermist.
