Just returned from a 3 day visit at MAYO clinic in Rochester MN. All is well and the doc says I'm healthy as a horse. (biopsy looks perfect)
For those of you who don't know I had a kidney/pancreas transplant last August. For those who are keeping track just wanted to let you know!!! Take care all!!      phil

After a Kidney transplant do you go in annually for a biopsy? How does it work.

I had to go in for a biopsy at 6 months and 1yr. next will be in another year, then not again for 2 yrs. then again at 4 years I believe. Mayo clinic keeps a close eye on things to make sure i don't reject the new organs. I will be on anti-rejectoin meds for the rest of my life. (as will Harry) But it sure beats taking 6 insulin shots a day and having to do dialasys daily. ( I was on peritoneal dialasys at home) With this method I had a catheter in my belly (not the other place! LOL ) and I changed fluid 4 times daily at 4 hour intervals.
I didn't have the option of hemodyalasys because our local hospital didn't have room for me. The other option for hemo was to drive 2 hrs.to Duluth Minn. sit for 4 hrs. and then drive home 2 hrs. This would have been every other day. That option was out.
The wonderful thing is Harry and I will take a small amount of meds.2 times daily and we can get on with our lives. To start out with the meds are a little overwelming but they slowly wean you off alot of them. I am currently on the least amount of anti-rejectoin meds that anyone can be on.
If anyone has questions feel free to post or pm me. The things doctors can do these days are truly a miracle and I believe a gift from god. I would love to help anyone I can with questions. Harry and I talked a while back and he does ,and will continue to understand all the things I told him in our conversation. Most people think kidneys only filter your blood to get rid of waste. There is a LOT more that your kidneys do like help control your hormones and help control blood pressure. (this doesn't mean that if you have high blood pressure your kidneys are failing)    Have a good night all!!!           phil
