May I be a bit critical?  I LOVED the painting, but I feel cheated.  You have headspace but the tail is cropped off.  I found myself being drawn to the bottom of the canvas looking for what was missing.  It's really stunning in its simplicity and detail, I just wish I could see his tail tip.

LOL  George, consider it a 3/4 mount.  Actually my eye goes to the CENTER of the piece.   To have moved the subject up to include the tip of the tail would place the focal point HIGH on the canvas.  It is rare, but on this one I have to disagree with you.  But, thats why they call it art.

Thanks everyone! Smiley

George- The tail being cut-off is simply poor planning on my part. My paintings are very spontaneous and when inspiration strikes, I just dive in. As soon as the background dries I just do a loose pencil sketch to find center and basic proportion of the main subject. I then just let the paint fly! LOL! Smiley
And Antlerman makes a valid point as moving the bird up any higher would crowd the painting in my opinion...I guess I just ran out of canvas on this one! Smiley

AntlerAddict, I figured exactly that. When I did a lot of drawing I was just like you in THAT category of spontaneity. I knew Tim was simply rationalizing.  LMAO   It's a gorgeous piece and as I said, I love the simplicity as well as the artistry. Thanx for sharing.

Excellent work! You obviously have a LOT of talent. But I was always taught not to put the subject of a painting in the middle of the canvas, as this is considered the 'dead zone' where the eye gets lazy and forgets to pick up detail. My instructors would always doc points from a project if we did that. Same thing applies to photography. Other than that, I totally love it! The colors are fantastic!

Very nice work. Colors are very vibrant and celebrate the bird nicely. Composition seems fine especially as a study. If you were to do the same painting with a background and one light source, then the composition would require more complexity and the bird would be better placed off center. Don't know if you were looking for opinions, but, especially with art, everyone's got one.
