Was just getting ready to start some pickling and this is what I found.  Not sure as to why it went this way.  Maybe condensation in the basement??
Is it still good??  Might try a little in a water and salt to see if the ph is any good.

Hope hear soon .

Update its not oxalic acid but Lutan F tanning agent. I tried a small batch and ph was 4-5 . I took a larger pice and  smashed it with a hammer back to grinds again  and it was different then oxalic acid. I look a round to hind the acid on a shelf.

So next question why would Lutan F turn it this chunk??

It got wet. Alum will do the same thing if it gets wet, and is not mixed with water ASAP.

Soda ash will do this also.

Throw it away!

Thanks Old Shaver. Not sure how it got wet but must have been condensation  and humidity.

WOW ! I have never seen Lutan F do that. Your pics look like some white frosting gone bad. I've had it clump up looking like chunks of chalk but never like yours.

Someone gave me about 2 pound of Lutan F the same as that and all I did was break it up into smaller pieces and then dissolved it in hot water and tanned as usual. Skins tanned fine.

Lutan F  has a guarranteed shelf life of 12 months if stored dry , in the dark and air tight, this info came from basf's Australian distributor however they also informed me that this was the minimum shelf life , if kept under the proper conditions it should be viable for 3 yrs. Cheers Peter
