Ninetoe,
Nice fish, poor taste. I know they have to be taken somehow, but this is like the customer that wants an arrow sticking out of his deer mount. I send them down the road.

Well, I have no problem with the fact that we as humans kill stuff, hey if you dont want to mount one that way, then dont. I wouldnt say you had bad taste because you did not.

That Pike did taste good though , in foil on the grill.

My posting for this week: a repair job!

This is what was brought in.  I quoted the client $20 per hour and it took 10.5 hours.

Seemed rather interesting the discrepancy between internet shots of live/fresh sailfish and photos of finished replicas and paint schedules.  Unfortunately there was no photo of this original fish.

It was interesting to do.  It gave me a chance to see some of the historical past of taxidermy.  This mount had a strip of real skin attached to a form.  The bill, pectoral fin and tail fin were real and the other fins were metal.  The dorsal fin was made of cardboard or pasteboard like you would find on the backside of older dressers and similar furniture.  Thin strips of wood were glued on to make the rays.

I welcome any comments concerning the re-paint job.  Have no plans to ever do a job like this but one never knows and words from experienced persons are always helpful; ind of like going to a competition and getting feedback from the judges.

Thanks and thanks for all the wonderful posts.  Too many words of praise could be put forth but I'll not.

Rick, you better stop teaching Travis- he's catching up to you! he he. great coho jack- love those!
NINETOE: Great job on that Pike! The spear thing is just creepy. That would be like printing pennies with a picture of John Booth in the background- he he. mshipman- awesome, NOAH: sweet repair- much better. Wild Bill: Nice scale tipping and great epoxie work! Here is a picture of my one and only attempt at flat art. This represents the beginning and end of my painting carreer- he he. Plus here is another angle of that state record smallmouth since I never have anything new Cool     Dave

Hey Gang just checking in from Altoona PA! Super show here this year and lots of awesome work at the Pennsylvania Taxidermy Association 28th annual Competition and membership convention!!!

A touch of unfamiliar controversy this week. Lets touch one this for a moment. It is different when an older style or a once portray style of mount is displayed such as Joel’s Pike depiction of the impaled Esox. Some time ago this style mount was depicted in the world of taxidermy as a portal of a style of harvest of angling in some areas or by some fisherman as is gaffing or netting in some cases. It is rarely seen as a public display any longer and or in a tradition taxidermy forum or competition any longer at all. The benefit of the doubt applies here for Joel. I have known Idea if Joel and other folks have been to a show or are member of association as many of us are, who partake in the WASCO site.

For some time now the depiction of pain or “blood scenes" has been frowned upon and or prohibited in the arena of competition. Traps or arrows or any thing for that matter that depicts the death or pain of a creature has been some what removed over the many years now that such rules in competition have been implemented. So back to the benefit of the doubt what Joel did was show a fish he mounted (well done) and brought it to This week in pictures to show his craft. Some have opinions this may taken back some folks who my have never seen such a mount or publicly any way as this type has been mitigated from competitions. So lets do this so we can all enjoy the gifts and works of all the great artists who share with us here. Keeping with the standards of today’s taxidermy and how we promote taxidermy in an all around friendly forum I think it would be ok to stay with the idea that no pain or depictions of fish with blood or what is called as suffering displays are shared with us at least here. If that sounds ok or fair lets go with that and continue to be a controversy free string. Joel I’m sure meant no hard to any one or intentions was to offend though in some cases it may have lead to this. Taxidermy and all phases of portray can and did show lots of different depictions in years past however today we all make great attempts to show what we do in a public friendly way to help promote the art side (if I can use that wit out offence) of what we all do and love.

So with that said!

Hey Michael S!!! Really sweet bass!!!! I like the Markings and the softness of the paintwork!!! Great Job!!

Hey Jerry! Great work on the Billfish! I think if approached the contract at an hourly rate, which was fair to both you and the client then you both win. It was affair job at 10.5 hours and they get a great fish back and you have served your clients needs while doing business with your talents! Great Business and great work!

Wild Bill!!!! Another Super job and a great fish! You really like the bass and it shows! Nice color and terrific work on the tipping!!!!

Hey Dave!!! Man oh Man what SWEEEEEET artwork!! Your flat art with or with out the incorporation of one of your great fish is just breathtaking! Really cool Smallie too!!!! Thanks for the kind words on Mr. Peterson! I’m glad he lives in Alaska! LOL!!!! He is doing great and is a great guy!

Well I did a BIG custom repro yesterday from Lou Wynia for the good folks at the PA show and it will be donated for auction at the Banquette this evening to help rains money for children’s program. I will have some pictures of this walleye up today at some point (after Lou Bellman helps get them on here! LOL!!!

Have a great weekend!
