OK. A few of the responses seemed like they took it wrong.

Yeah, Bob, that is what I ment... 'Wink
I usually cape out, rough flesh, then turn and split everything after it is all off the skull. This one was thin fleshed and turned on the skull. Just something I usually dont do. I fleshed out thin as I caped, I mean thin enough to not have to shave the cape after tanning.

I have an auto tanner, too. But I still salt. I dont get too many things in at one time, and I need to make each batch at least three capes at a time. I hate using up freezer space, and salting saves space as well as help lock in the hair.

Just want sure how many people thin flesh and turn as the skin is being removed from the carcass. Cool to know I aint alone! Smiley

I misunder stood  as well. I still don't let any go in the freezer unless I absolutely have to. I usually work until they are all done for the day.

That would be a great way to do it.  If you have the time.  Being that I also process. I'm skinning , cutting , caping ,bagging and freezing for 2 weeks staight. But boy to have them all fleshed and turned before they went in the freezer would be wonderful.

The first week of gun season here in NC (Thanksgiving week)? After all the paperwork is filled out & position is determined, it gets measured & form picked out- then it takes 5 minutes tops- it's caped, tagged, bagged & headed to the freezer. It gets thawed later (after Jan 1st) to flesh & turn (any needed sewing done), and ear cartilage removed-then refrozen 'til it's time to be mounted. With the volume that we turn, this works best for us.
It may seem like a long time before any mounting gets done. During slow periods, a few hides get fleshed and prepped as they come in.
My husband was hunting before he ever started doing taxidermy work, and IF HE doesn't get out of this shop (and my hair) to go hunting...I'm afraid I'd have him shot & mounted on the wall alongside his deerheads!  I push him out (of the shop)to go fishing every chance I can too! Just think for a minute about this . . .when he has a great trip fishing & hunting, he comes back in a great mood (& I get fresh venison & fish!). One of us are in the shop at all times covering what's needed to be done. "Burn out"  is banned around here!
(OH YEAH...and some time by myself to do a few projects on the side)I like remodeling the house (& shop), developing new concepts/ideas for habitats, and of course mounting my "Woolie boogers" or " Swamp Monsters". Nothing like a full-time job as a taxidermist!
