I measure the raw skin and order forms, I order in bulk though at the end of season and always order a few extra.

I am a after tan man, raw skin lets out after skinning, and gives a false over inflated size. imo.

I measure the meat and order the form. Usually have the form ready by the time the cape gets back from the tannery.

With Bill on this. In woodworking I always measure twice before the cut and do the same in taxi work.

I measure after tanning, I tan up 25 or so measure and send out for forms. I do measure the meat and record those measurements while the customer is there to leave out any doubt that ( my neck was bigger than that ).

I wait till I get a few thousand dollars in deposits, order a LOT of forms and when they bring in their deer, look at what I have in stock that will fit their deer and proceed to "sell" them that style of form and turn Smiley

If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

The way I have done it for decades.  I take many facial measurements over the skin, then measure the neck meat, and compensate a bit for the flatness of the muscles after death.  I mark these measurements on my chart for that Deer, then order the correct size headform.

After the cape returns from the Tannery, I soak it up, relax it, remove ear cartilages, trim up the face, and it always fits the form to a "T."  Any minor alterations for size - adjusting the face to match or adding to or taking away form the neck - is accomplished, and the Deer head is mounted.

So, I order the headform after measuring the Deer.  Easy peasy!

John.

I measure like John does and when I get a few deer in I order forms. I will be mounting deer next week from this season. i dont wait to get a whole bunch in before I order, cause I only take in about 15 deer a year and that will be spread out through Feb. So I order them when I get a few.
