Would anyone here recommend schools for a beginner taxidermist, or are they too fast paced?

definitely recommend a school, call around and ask about the pace so you find one at the speed you want to go.

I went to Missouri Taxidermy Institute. http://www.taxidermy-schools.com/default.htm I enjoyed it and learned a lot. Very friendly and get a wide variety of knowledge and species. I am sure there are a number of great schools out there. Do your research, make phone calls, references are always good. Look at what your options are, what you can afford, and what you want to get out of it. It took me 6 months to decide where I was going to go.

www.protaxidermy.com

We have studios in Klamath Falls Oregon & Fairbanks Alaska.

Personal, ONE ON ONE training with RJ Simington.

Work on the species You want to learn & not be in a hurry to keep up with everyone else in the class because you are the only student at that time.

Give Teresa a call, You will be glad you did.

Alex,
Please check out Western PA School of Taxidermy, Call Marc and ask him about his school. I've been there and  graduated from his school. Marc is a really great guy and runs a Class A school. His training is second to none. Marc will spend the necessary time with you one on one to ensure you totally understand what is being taught. Do yourself a big favor and give him a ring and chat about your concerns and questions.... I'm sure you will enjoy his classes.

         Thanks,  Lance!

When I see Obama bumper sticker, I know the academic standard has lowered!

Thought for today!

Learning...one of life's greatest tools!

Hello Alex,

There are several things to consider when it comes to finding the best training that is out there.

You need to ask yourself, "How much do you want to spend?  How much time can you afford?  What do you really want to learn?  How far are you willing to travel (remember, you need to get your pieces back to where you live)?  Do they provide accommodations?  Do they teach multiple individuals or just one at a time?  What all is included in the cost of tuition fees?

From there you need to find an instructional facility that accommodates your needs.  I would then check out the credentials of your instructor(s)...don't be afraid to request pictures of what their taxidermy work looks like.  Ask what, if any, accomplishments they have achieved in taxidermy?  I would then look and see what there past students have to say about that facility good and bad and what did the students pieces look like. Again, good or bad?

From there, it's totally your decision.  Good luck in your search.

That's where I went.  It is a good place to start whether you've had some experience or not.

CTST in Snyder, Texas was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I highly recommend calling Jason Bynum at the school. I went in with no experience what so ever and left with great confidence after the six week program and the knowledge and skills to be a great taxidermist.
