Guessing it was dry tanned? Just dunk a back paw in a 1/4 lb salt/gallon solution for a little while and keep an eye on it, the fat that is typically left in the paw area seems to cause that to be the part that goes bad the fastest. If it gets rubbery feeling and the skin is weak and will tear I wouldn't go any farther, if it seems to be O K then you can risk the rest of the skin. There's no way that I know of to find out without actually soaking something, so doing a back paw will be about the least noticeable if there is a problem and it's good for nothing but a wall hanger.
