I am color blind so to relive the stress of trying to figure the color of the paper out. I bought a Oakton PH Tester #10 .
Problem solved.

What acid are you using?

Are you dipping the strip in the pickle?

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. They are one and the same...

Re-hydrate! It is an important step.

I am using saftee acid , yes i am dipping the strip in the pickle, going to tan a bobcat using Liqua Tan, thank you for the reply

Instead of dipping the strip into the pickle, try using your stirring stick and place a drop on the paper.

By dipping it in the pickle you are leeching some of the chemical indicator out of the paper.  This is evident due to the coloration change part way up the paper.  It changes from a light pink to a darker red..

Just one drop is all it takes..
