Bases without a wood border

Been searching the site but have not found an answer. Seems there are many ways to make a base.
I need a base for a cat in fighting pose. I plan to make a plywood floor structure with blocking for the feet to the right height . Then cover with chicken wire and use burlap and plaster.
What is done at the edges for support . Is the plaster more then one layer thick all over.Seen some very nice rock ledges built on here but I guess i need to try one to see which way is best for me.
Also what if two of the feet are on flat ground?
Do you just lay different thicknesses of wood under the wire to make the ground not look flat?

On bases the size you would use for a Bobcat I just use foam.
I use wire and burlap for the big stuff. You should staple down the wire as close to the edge as possible, as this is what helps hold the burlap/plaster to the base. I make the plaster thin and runny so the burlap soaks it up. as the plaster starts to thicken up in the bucket, I scoop it by hand putting a thick layer to smooth out the edges.
If you want different layers to the base then build it up and create them before adding wire. (photo added)
