I was wondering what you guys and gals would consider the shelf life to be on some opened two part foam.  I just made a base with some I have had around for a long time and it didn't expand like I thought it should have.  I need to buy some more and I am wondering that if I buy a gallon of the stuff, will it lose its properties in say 2-3 years if I use it at different times during a three year period ?

Thanks - Mark

Hi Drop Tine -

Yeah I am pretty sure it was mixed right.  I used a wooden craft stick but next time I will try the wire in the drill maybe that will help.

Manufacturers say 6 months. I would say a year Max. After that its a crap shoot.

I just bought a couple of gallons and the instructions said to use within 3 months. Lots of variables go into how much it expands including the humidity and temperature.

Anything that comes in a metal can is in there for a reason.

My experience with foam shelf life is 2-3 years, maybe a bit longer if you can keep the lid sealed.  Wipe down both parts of the cap with acetone and try to keep it sealed, and LIKE ANYTHING, store in a cool, dry place.

Spent a few bucks and buy a high quality stirring rod, a piece of bent 12 gauge galv wire doesn't cut it.  I bought one at the local pottery store.  Looks like a propeller with a ring on it about 2 " in diameter on about a 3/8" shaft, made of stainless.  Makes a huge difference in the quality of foam, I wouldn't mix foam without it. After mixing, spin it in the trash can to "fling it" clean while spraying a little acetone on it.  Ready to use the next time

Good Luck

X2 Jimmy...... The wire didn't do anything for me and the foam wound up being soft after it set. The second batch I did worked a lot better but I used tongue depressors. Watched as the color changed to be uniform and then waited until it started to rise before I poured it out. Used a paintbrush to spread around and by breaking the surface I got some great texture. Better to mix multiple times than to try and do in one mix.
