Did anyone notice what they were using in the second episode of Mounted in Alaska? That's right. Smooth-On's Rebound 25 for the mold making of the King Crab. Then PlastiPaste for the support shell on the mold. Finally, Smooth Cast for casting the crab parts.

I thought it was cool to see the same stuff that I use in my shop on a daily basis on TV.

I thought the casting project was a great subject and model. I just didn't get the initial hesitation to make the molds.

It was a good sequence in the show.

Another thought:

Hey Beaker. Talk to the powers that be at Smooth-On. They are missing a great advertising opportunity.

You know I am surprised none of the big taxidermy companies were not approached for advertising. I'm very surprised no schools jumped in too advertise during the show.

Cliff, what taxidermy related industry do you know that could front the cost of a 20 second ad on national TV? For their return, it just wouldn't be worthwhile.  We, taxidermists will use them but of the 2.3 million viewers projected to have watched it, just how many of them were taxidermists?

Past figures that I recall were that the US has about 18,000 practicing taxidermist.  Now giving them a couple extra thousand wannabes and making all of them set in front of a TV would mean that .009% . I don't think I'd spend a $1 million for that small of a prospective return.

G, I think I agree with you on the major taxidermy suppliers. The one reason I mentioned that Smooth-On could do something is from how I started using their products.

I was home sick from work one day and going out of my mind watching chick daytime TV. Then I scanned past,,,,,Martha Stewart,,,,there I said it,,,,and some light in the loafers dude was making a mold of a stick and casting candles. The rest was, as they say, history. I was hooked on mold making and casting. That's how I found TFB Plastics, got them involved in the taxidermy world and have now come to have a full time relationship with TFB making molds and doing casting work for them. So, the ability for Smooth-On to get the crew on the show to do more casting projects and have them turn the buckets around could pay off in more than just the taxidermy world. It was just a thought.

My whole point was that I saw the exact same materials that I use in the shop for my taxidermy work and thought it was cool. Just another worthless post on the old taxi.net.

What I liked was unless you know the products yourself they did not tell anyone what they were using, as far as the general pop goes they were using some magic cream.LOL

Doug, have you ever watched Myth Busters?  They use Smooth On all the time for their molds, as well as balistic gels.  Everytime I watch with the kids they ask me, "Hey, how come I don't see any Innovative buckets there?"  Little turkeys!

Smooth On is used in a lot of venues!  They've been around for a long time and do well making impacts in many industries.
