Thanks,

The comments will be well taken Rick.
Like I said this was my first attempt . I wanted to be subtle with my texture and color because I see too many people going a little over the edge with them. Makes them look fake to me. But if I went too subtle, thats good too know. I can work on that the next time.
And they are constructed of a  1/2" board top and 2x2 sides so they are hollow, and have open bottoms for access for wires or all threads. I cut the top in odd shapes then sculpt the rest with a water base putty (this stuff gets rock hard, don't shrink, or crack) Then I have an additive I add too the base color paint that's like sand. Then I just air brush them.

I like the shapes that you have created.
Just a little more detail in color and they should really come together.

Mason, those look like "mountain rocks" I see in the Appalachians.  The colors will work best for you if you use several to give it a kalaidescope appearance.    Many of the rocks today are like I use and the lazy man's way out where "rock mix" is used over foam and plaster of Paris.  Not all rocks are "crusty" and a good mix of smooth flat rocks would be more realistic in a turkey background than what I make IN MY OPINION>

I gotta say, watching Mason through all the pictures he 's been posting since he has started, I'd say he has the touch and is going to do real well in the taxidermy field.

     Yeah George,
I live in the laurel mountains here in SW Pa. This is where I got my reference for them. I been a mason for 19 years and not sure how many of them boogers I've laid up .For a years we done several stone jobs a year. Not a lot of call for it now with all the artificial stuff out there now.
And MR.T, Thank you very much for the compliment. Linda says it must be true coming from you LOL
After you said this in another post of ours (Looks very good for the first bird Mason, your wife does good work!)  She says you reeeaaallllyyyy must know what you are talking about  Grin.
I am going to try a little different texture and paint on the next one though to see how it looks. Thanks again for all the comments everybody. We need all the advice we can get!

I do quite a bit of habitat work I have been using McKenzie rock mix and if you play with it you can get a good looking rock, but this past weakend at the Ohio show I met Justin & Mark Nagy from PA. They gave out a sample of there new rock mix, I tried it out yesterday and was really impressed with the outcome, the stuff dries extremely strong its not fragile like the McKenzie stuff. I'm going to use up the last 10 lbs of my other stuff and I plan on ordering some from these guys. Seems like great stuff.
