Question

I'm molding an oryx horn with rtv. The first coat was good come in this morning to check second coat and it's still tacky. Probably not enough hatdener. Do I have to start all over or can I put the third coat on with extra kick to harden second layer. Just wondering if it could work that way. Thanks

That is a tough one... need to figure out what caused the product to not set up... assuming not enough catalyst is not enough as it might happen again if you apply the third layer.. is it tin based silicone or platinum based? Platinums are much more sensitive to curing than tins... you could potentially encapsulate the bad layer BUT if the inhibition is prevalent, there is nothing you can do until the inhibitor is removed from the equation

I know it's the expensive option but I say remove it and start over. You might do a test with a scaled down quantity to make sure your mix is correct. Check out the Smooth-On website or call their technical help guys. You're better off having a perfect mold that can be used many times instead of taking a chance with an encapsulated layer.

You might give it another day or two to cure before you make a decision..
