hi all, ive made a few rocks using the McKenzie mix and they have turned out decently well. ive managed to fool some people with them but im not overly satisfied with the texture of the mix. all my rocks come out looking like they were made of nothing but gravel. i dont know if i just got a few bags of extra textured stuff by chance or if im doing something wrong. any help is appreciated

I reach in the bag and stir it up with my hands so the course stuff is mixed through out the bag before using it . When building your rock after it has set up a little you can rub the rock with your hands , tooth brush , etc. to smooth  it out .

You did not just get extra texture in your mix, it's just that way.
It's great for bigger rocks, but if your looking fo detailed rocks you will have to find an alternative route.

It's all in the technique.  After I put down the base coat of plaster of Paris, I mix the rock mix about like soft oatmeal.  I spread it around by hand.  When the stucco is complete, I use a spray bottle with water and mist down the new coat.  Then I smooth it out once again.  If I want a sandstone texture, I simply pat the surfaces and allow it to pull up little spikes.  When it's cured, I take a heavy dowel and rub it back and forth across that spiny surface. This knocks down  the sharp points.
