Real looking grass or hay? Any suggestions for a Groundhog base.

Hello all,
I have to do a few Groundhogs for a customer, and was looking for some input for somewhere to get some real looking grass or short hay. Looking to have the groundhog standing in an alert pose and was looking for the grass to be 3-5 inches in height. First time doing a groundhog and was kinda looking for a little help from some of the members. Thanks in advance.

Stay away from the "short grass and hay". Groundhogs love bigger and more moist plants as a part of a regular diet. Go to Michaels or Hobby Lobby and find medium sized plants or something resembling soy beans. Insure you put enough to cover the "ground". Nothing ruins a good mount quicker than a scrimpy habitat.

Yea George,
I know what you mean about a sparse habitat. I was at AC Moore the other day, which prompted this post. All of the stuff they sell there looks so plastic and fake. Maybe some McKenzie grass cut down at the base and then blended into the base, Guess it's experiment time!

AC Moore has gotten worse with that. Michael's is a bit better. Any more I buy the "wreaths" and arrangements and cut and piece together my own.

Groundhogs tear the hell out of acorns around here too. Thats just another option. I remember the first time I had one climb a tree by me. Scared the crap out of me because I had no idea they could climb and I wasn't sure what it was at first. Nothing in my head was saying groundhog. LOL

Years ago, Connie and I were muzzleloading and I heard her fire her gun. That was before cellphones. Fearing she might need help, I got down and went to her stand. She was still in the stand. Puzzled, I whispered, "What the hell did you shoot at?" She said, "A beaver climbed up my tree and I shot him." Laying at the base of the tree was a dead groundhog. My deer hunt was over as I couldn't stop laughing

LOL Thats funny. I use to have a farmer that paid me to wait over his beans to kill the groundhogs. It never failed that when the others ran back towards the trees I could never find any holes any where or a den site. I was to young and dumb to ever look up but something tells me they were above me laughing.
