I paint fake pine limbs a lot, I paint them with dark brown tempera paint I get at Hobby Lobby.  It's actually kinda rusty  brown and matches most pines pretty good.  I add tempera paint to the mache, apply to limb base, imprint bark texture with silicone molds.  After it mostly is dry I sponge more paint kinda blotchy on the limb. I will then paint some tempera black in crevices.
