This is just how I do my rat tails. I have a ball python, and when she rejects her meal (frozen-then-thawed, whole rats), it gets skinned and re-frozen. (only have one right now, lol.) Skin on rat-tails is surprisingly not as attached as it is on other animals; I have seen people pick up feeder rats by the tail, too close to the tip, and have a few inches of skin come right off in their hand as the rat fell to the ground!  Shocked

I did end up trying this and it worked great! Now I'm a bit confused about the next step. Do you split the tails? I didn't split mine and tried salting it by funneling salt down into the tail, but over the course of a day it still hadn't dried out. But I really don't want to split the tail and then have a noticeable seam in it. Is it at all possible to completely turn the tail inside out so it can be salted and tanned?

If you want to salt the mouse, or rat, you will have to split the tail. Otherwise, just mount it as is. Give it a quick soak in denatured alcohol, put some dry preservative down in the tail, and shake it out, then mount.
