Everyone has their own method of doing this and most use some kind of twine and tape. I just happened to bring over a tool from my airplane mechanic days that does a superior job of securing and locking down a wire/rod to a bone. They are called "Safetywire Pliers" or "Lockwire pliers". They (and the .032 stainless lockwire) are available from Harbor Freight.

You wrap the wire around the bone and wire with equal lengths remaining.  Squeeze the two pieces together and about 2 inches away from the bone, you close the pliers over both pieces and slide the "lock" back, holding the piers shut firmly on the wire. Then you grasp the knurled knob between the handles and simply pull.  The piers rotate and twist the wire evenly.  Grasping the pliers firmly, you flip your wrist to clost the wire loop down tight against the bone and wire.  Lay the twisted piece against the bone and repeat the step on the opposite side.  You do this several times and firmly and positively lock the wire and bone together.  Snip the tag end and curl it under so it won't cut you, then wrap the leg with electrical tape.  Rebuild your muscle  and mount.

I used to use them when rewiring the gasport tubes on the M-60 Machine Guns.  Part of the Armorer's toolkit.  Didn't know that Harbor Freight sold them.  Great idea!
