I've searched through the forum and I now have more questions.

1st qustion-  I have "snaketan" by Trent Meyer.  I have read mixed reviews about this.  Can this be used on a full body mount, since it leaves the skin oily?

2nd-  I havent read much on Reptile tan by Knoblch?  Does anyone recommend this?  Can 50 50 be used on a full body mount?

3rd-  What kind of paste do I used to tack the skin to the form?

4th- Does any one have the instruction for using Rittles Snake tan?

Thanks

I use glycerine/alcohol (1:1) mixture on all my reptile mounts (lizards/snakes).  I have since 1982 when I did my first rattlesnake skin.  It's as soft as ever.  I put one coat on for mounts, I do not soak them in it.  And I use Dynamite 111 for hide paste on all my taxidermy mounts (except birds).  Trust me the glycerine does not interfere with the hide paste.

Thanks for all the info.  I have used 50 50 before on a skin and tacked it to a board.  Has anyone used Snake Tan?  Thanks for the instructions on rittles.

Kerby,  What would happen if I soaked the skin in the solution rather than brushing it on?

The purpose of using glycerine/alcohol on flat skins is to keep them soft, which it does.  Putting the mixture on one coat at a time allows the alcohol to penetrate the skin carrying the attached glycerine.  The alcohol evaporates leaving the glycerine in the skin.  Soaking a skin in the glycerin/alcohol mixture would not accomplish this.  When I am mounting reptiles I want the skin to be soft while I am mounting it and not drying out ( I live in Arizona).  The Dynamite 111 is a water based clay glue and between the glue and the skin having one coat of glycerine/alcohol allows me a couple of days of fixing any skin alignment, ect on the mount before it dries.  Otherwise it would be dried overnight and you would be stuck with how it looks.

It works for me.  Just find what works.....afterall it is the finished product we are after.

I would have to check the bottle, but it is regular rubbing alcohol from the store.
