new to taxidermy/ online school question?

Hello everyone this is my first post. I have a unique situation. I am in the U. S. Coast Guard station in CT. I love the outdoors in general, hunting and fishing are my passions. I have always been interested in taxidermy just now i want to do something about it. I dont know if it is realistic to think it could be a full-time job for me, but i want to learn it and i need to know where to start. I have no plans to get out of the Coast Guard but with my schedule i could def do taxidermy on the side. Ity would be awesomed if the old salts in taxidermy on this forum could point me in the right direction. Take care.

Dont know how others started but here is what I did.

Pick up the phone and call every taxi shop around you. Ask if they need FREE help. go there and start doing the grunt work on your time and your dime. Be prepared for a wide range of answers. Some think that you should pay them for the training, others will let you help.

After you learn some basics, you can start with some weekend training classes on specifics.....basic mount, finish work, etc. with taxi's in the area. They will charge you for the training, but it's well worth it. After that......practice, practice, and did I say practice. There is a lot to learn.
