Hi all, Im at it hard again for another louisiana duck season. Today we did very well and after retrieving a drake gadwall I noticed this bird had a complete black and white ring around his neck. I know I've seen this somewhere but cant locate any info on it. Whether its rare, or what causes this. Iv killed hundreds of gadwals and this is a first to me. Can anyone shed some light or share similar kills. I also have a purple headed gaddy that I killed last season at my taxi right now. A ring necked one might fit in well with him.

I hunt in south Louisiana and we've killed four so far this season with black neck rings. Killed another 5-6 with purple heads. We've never seen gadwalls with the colors like they have this year. I don't know what is going on but they sure are pretty. I even kept one of them for a competition bird this year.

Im loacted in Meraux LA I hunt delacroix island primarily. These ducks were killed in in shell beach. This duck definetly has a pernounced ring but it isn't fully colored. Im debating on mounting him. I really wish the black was more full but if this ducks a once in a lifetime thing it'd probably smart to.

Birds get irregularities in coloration all the time for one reason or another. If the bird is pretty to you get it mounted. But just cause its different doesnt make it necessarily attractive. I've talked a couple clients out of getting immature pinfeathery mallard/pintail crosses mounted because they were flat out ugly birds! Some folks think its great to get an ugly bird mounted just because its different. Its personal preference but I'd eat him.

I would never expect a taxidermist to talk me into not mounting a bird just cause he thought it was ugly. If the boy wants to mount the bird, let him get it mounted. He obvisiouly excited about the bird, which i was also on a similar bird I killed. Your posting took the excitement for him out of me, I can only imagine how he feels.

Young taxidermist I would surely mount that nice specimen u got there. I hunt out of Grand Isle with duckhntr594. Below is pic of me with a similar I killed like yours. Other pic of the single bird is the same duck killed. Other pic is one killed by one of us yesterday morning.

so duck hunter and cajun, would yall say it's a rarity to see a gaddy with these traits or is it fairly common? Basically noone I've talked to have ever killed or even seen a gaddwall with the ring.

Young Taxidermist if you like the bird , then by all means mount the bird. Your the one that it means something too..I had a pin feather Mallard mounted when I killed my first mallard and yes it was not that pretty but it was my first and so I mounted it.. I dont care what others say I know what it means to me and if that grey means something to you then go ahead and put him on your wall..Good luck this year hunting,  I hunt chalmette area, and having the best year yet, so many ducks and a limit each day except 2 times so far, actually had many redheads this year also, something we dont get many off like we use to..have fun
