Gadwalls with black neck rings are very uncommon but I wouldn't say they are rare. You might not ever get another one or you might get 2 on your next trip. It's hard to say.

It has a neck ring and a pretty fair amount of purple on the head, so it's a nice gadwall.  If you aren't sure then you can always skin it and freeze the skin in water.  It will keep practically forever like that and won't take up much freezer space. Maybe you will get another odd one to go with it someday. Ya never know.

Thanks nancy for the reply I was hoping you would chime in. Not to discredit all others posts but everything I see you say is spot on. Secure, that sure is one beautiful gray since your so close we should trade off a hunt later on in the season.

Killed another ring necked gadall a few weeks ago. This time the ring is much larger and darker, Beautiful bird. I still cant get over that I've never even seen a gadwall like this before and this year I killed two. Anyone else get any with the black ring this year?

I kept two for a mount. I think I messed up when I cleaned the one with the yellow neck, I now feel I should have kept it. He was pretty shot up from a close range shot. Probably will never see that kind of Grey duck again.
