Air dried skins are the one thing I do use bactericide on. I soak the skins in a salt/water bath with a couple cap fulls of bactericide. Just enough to float the skin till it's rehydrated enough to bag up and refrigerate over night to sweat. The next morning I put the skin in a pickle.
