Couldn't resist, so I took it out of the freezer and skinned it out.  I will be making a carcass cast for a custom mount.  A very easy snake to skin leaving the carcass in one piece.

Since the taxidermy supply companies don't have a 50 inch gaboon viper form I will make a carcass cast of this one.  Once skinned I take the entrails out and rinse the body cavity.

Stuff the body cavity with newspaper to help the carcass hold it's shape.  Then position it the way I want it.  You could freeze the carcass in the position if you wanted to.

I then add clay to the carcass to help in getting the shape back and to make up for the fat and tissue that is still on the skin and not on the carcass.  Now I could have spent more time on the clay work to get a good smooth shape but I would rather sand the mannikin later for smoothness.

Once the carcass is clayed I then add my first coat of plaster of paris.  Once that sets I add another coat with burlap strips for support, once dried I add another coat filling in the curves of the mold for support.

The bag of plaster was only $20 and I used a little over half.  The clay was cheap clay for the huge bag that I bought years ago.  I may not reuse this clay from the carcass.

To be continued....................

Once the plaster mold set I turned it over and removed the gaboon from the mold.  It lifts right out.  Cleaned out some remaining clay.

Okay, I let the plaster mold dry overnight and most of the day, brushed on a clear coat of varnish, let dry and then put 2 coats of car wax for mold release.  Let dry and then mixed up bondo and fiberglass resin so that it would pour easily and coated the bottom and sides of the mold.

More to come.............

Jeremy, looking forward to meeting you.  I did see a fence lizard today while working out at the shop although the night time temps are below zero.  If it is sunny I'm sure those buzztails are out sunning themselves.  The last time I was in Washington was in 1991 (Ft. Lewis).

I will be molding a nose horn viper in my seminar....cute little feller.  Smiley

I have to prep him tomorrow and pump in full of caulk/silicone.

As for Tom......well he talks funny.    Grin
