cat pee

A friend of mine has a pie bald skin tanned and was draped over the back of his couch. His cat peed on it and now there is a bald spot just where the cat peed. He asked me why and I really wasn't sure. Just out of curiosity we would like to know. I'm thinking maybe the ammonia in the pee?

The hair may have fallen out from bacteria that may have grown, if the urine stain went undetected.
There is uric acid and urea in a cats urine. I clean taxidermy rugs when doing restorations/refurbishes that have been urinated on by dogs and/or cats. If left uncleaned due to being undetected, there will be a nasty acidic burn on the leather side of the skin. This usually has to be removed and patched.
When a cat has urinated on any rug, as the urine dries the urine changes from the acid side to the alkaline side of the pH scale. Most carpet cleaning products are formulated on the alkaline side of the pH scale. Alkaline based cleaning products have little cleaning ability on alkaline based soils. Acids neutralize alkaline and vice versa.
I always recommend a good urinary acidifier, from the vets or pet shop, to be used on a fresh pet urine stain.
