I am shaving my 1st Yote and I was just wondering exactly how thing they should be or if it is possible to get it TOO thin? Sounds stupid but, here in the pic you'll see where my mini flesher would take off what weems like a lot. My guard is as low as it will go, so should it look so thin? Like I can see hair follicles like in the picture? Or not so much  Thanks Smiley

Normal.  Looks like an September, October  or Early November Coyote. To test and see if you've gone too deep drag your thumbnail along the grain and no hair should pull thru.  The whole coyote should shave out and look like that blue spot, but no deeper. You will see follicles thru the skin but not actual hair shafts.

That's EXACTLY what it is it was September/ Octoberish   I will do that test for sure, I did not see any hair shaft pulling through or anything, just a very thin layer of skin over the follicles.  Thank you so much! Smiley

just make sure you do not go ANY thinner! if you cut the roots out, you will have a junk cape. just make sure the hide turns a blueish tint, then it will be thinned enough. you can change how the flesher cuts by how you tune the blade with your tuning steels. get more of a 90 degree angle and it won't grab so much.

ok I have another question. After I finished tanning the hides I finished shaving them, but I tried not to go down as far as the "blueish tint" bc I was afraid it was going to deep bc I did that test and could see very tiny strands sticking up a little bit. When I was done, the hides are now kind of greasy again, so I was wondering if they did not tan very well and if I should tan them again or something?  Thanks for any input.

I did degrease it in a dawn bath for about 40 mins. before I tanned it...should I do it again? As long as they always look sort of greasy its ok then. Thank you for your help! Smiley
