A few questions about doing porcupine.  Do we salt the hide like a deer?  Do you pickle it? We read somewhere on here that Borax sets the quills, but how do we apply it exactly?  We've done deer, bear, and hogs...but porcupine feels totally different.  Answers to a few questions would be greatly appreciated.

Treat it like any other skin, skin be careful when fleshing as there skin is very thin and tears easily, salt, pickle, tan, pickle the skin by itself as the quills stick into anything they come in to contact with.

while skinning, if it starts to fall don't try to catch it, or better yet skin it on the floor.  That's the best advice I've ever seen here for porcupines!

My 2 cents... Flesh going with the the quills.. From the butt to the head.. Or sideways ..   Ur going to lose quills Mainly around the rump.. But u can buy replacesments cheap on ebay.. Also they dont make to many forms.. So your best bet is a carcus cast. Or body wrap mount..  Very grease too.. I use borax when fleshing it helps to dry up grease slop..

Good luck have fun.. And u will get stuck.. I always do.. Wink

easy to do, case skin it gently flesh (as quills fall out easy) hand wash only (no washing machine you will loose all your quills) pickle degrease and tan, oil and mount VanDykes has forms a little prickly but look very nice when done
