Need a "TRUE "MATTE" finish ! (Pic)
«

Tryin to finish up some rocks for a base and I cant get a true matte finish? I have KRYLON spray matte and I got some Mod Podge matte spray today and both look shiney to me?
Anyone know a good one I can use? Or is it best to dust them with an acrylic white/grey ?
Thanks

Try to find some clear flat instead of matte.
Matte is supposed to be the same as flat but that's not always the case.
Matte varies from brand to brand as to the amount of shine you get.
I think the last flat clear I found was at Lowe's I think it was Valspar

Mix talcum powder with your paint.

Use Krylon (or any brand) clear flat. If that doesn't work rub some dirt on it.

Thanks all,
We've done quite a few rocks in the past, always have a faint sheen to them. Just tired of seein that.
These ones. I took some acrylic in the air brush and very lightly dusted them. seemed to work good. But, I will try these other tricks in the future.
Thanks for all the help.

Go to a hobby shop and ask for some Dull Coat. (I think it is spelled differently than that.)
There are some other equivalent products, too. They are used to make scale models look old and used, and they are absolutely dead flat when they dry.

You can find it in most hobby and model stores. It's sold by Testors and used to "age" model cars and planes. I've used it in the past but found it to work just like adding talcum powder to clear sealers. Talc will work in lacquer but won't push through the same airbrush tips as lacquer paint. The talc will clog up your tip. With acrylic clear sealers and the more open tips,it goes on quite well.

Rub some sand or dirt on them. They are rocks, aren't they?

Thanks for all the tips folks. I'll be using them on the next one.
This is what I ended up with on this one. Pretty happy so far. Not sure what I will add or delete, after the critter is mounted up on it.

Hold the can back away from the object you are painting. you will have to use different distances to figure it out. Matte finish is not the same a a flat finish.
