I mount them spun dry, after I mix up 20 vol and basic white into a thick frothy paste.. Rub in the hairs from face back to the shoulders. Let sit 1-2 hours, then in the tub with a shower handle.. Rinse nose to back.. Blow out most acwater with a air gun, master blaster, etc. then blow dry for 2-3 hours/groom.. They come out as white as a sheet of paper.

Bleaching after mounting was the old way of doing it. I bleach the wet tanned hide so that I can get all the underwood. I can also neutralize the bleach. I think just as important as bleaching is the conditioning of the hair afterwards. This adds a huge dimension ti the grooming. When I mount one everything us done beforehand so all I have to do is blowdry and groom.

Yep.  What George said.  I find it much easier, and the neutralizer and conditioner are essential.

Gorgeous goat Lone Wolf.

And THAT dear friends is what happens when you condition that hair and groom it. Doesn't hurt to have a primed goat either. LOL

So after the tan, what type of bleach/fix are you using to bleach the hair? Also what are you using to neutralize the bleach solution? And what type pf conditioner? Thanks!

Slee,
George has probably answered this so many times he mumbles it in his sleep here is a past post on how to do it his way (I have done it this way because of georges advice for many years now and it works great)

Gotta bleach them
This response submitted by George on 01/11/2004. ( georoof@aol.com ) 64.12.96.79
Here's the recipe. You'll need:
Rubber gloves
1 Can Basic White bleaching agent
1 Gallon 30% peroxide (preferably the gelled)
1 Gallon good hair conditioner

Take your hide outside and lay it hair side up. Mix the bleach as described on the containers. Mix enough to cover the entire skin. Wet the hide with a hose and push the excess water out of it like a squeegee. With your hands, massage the bleach all over the entire hide. If you don't you'll end up with spots.

Let it set for 20 minutes. NO MORE. Then wash it off with a hose. See if the finished product is what you want. If it's not, repeat this same process, BUT ONLY ONCE MORE. Any more than that, you endanger the hair becoming brittle and breaking off.

Wash it off completely and then take the conditioner and massage it into the hair. Let it set for 10 to 15 minutes and wash it out. Then spin dry your hide in a washing machine for 2 full cycles. Then mount. When complete, blow dry your hide as you back brush it. The inner wool will fluff up nicely and the guard hairs will stick up like porcupine quills for a beautiful effect.

Good Luck, Alan

Gents
Where does one find Basic White?
I've only ever mounted one other goat & the guy was adamant that his was left "vanilla" colored.
I've got 3 to mount this yr & all want their billies whitened.

Thanks in advance & good info shared here.

Basic White is a commercial namebrand for magnesium carbonate. Any beautician or beauty supply house will carry it.
