After several attempts to purchase some perch I finally found a supplier. He was very kind to respond to my mail. However I was cautioned that certain sales were prohibited in some states, including Al.I contacted my warden and he spoke with his superior saying as long as they were shipped for mounting purposes frozen or dead the state had no qualms with my purchase out of state.Seems eveyone has run from my contact.I understand the caution, just curious for some intake from the net here.

Thats interesting , I have always heard that it is illegal to sell fish for taxidermy here in Michigan anyway, I would assume it would be the same everywhere. It's good that you did your homework . I would like to hear more input on this issue myself from the "fishguy's" on here.

In Arizona it is illegal to buy/sell/trade/barter any Arizona wildlife whole.  So for example, it is illegal to buy/sell/trade/barter a whole frozen squirrel from Arizona.  The seller from Arizona can be prosecuted, but I doubt that the buyer from another state will be (could be, but I doubt they would put the effort).

Arizona G&F allows state residents to purchase other wildlife from out of state (providing they aren't protedcted, etc.).  I have purchased fish from Cecil Baird before (farm raised fish).

Although checking with your local game warden sounds reasonable, I would find it in print.....afterall that's what a judge will do.  In Arizona there are Arizona Revised Statute (A.R.S. Codes) Codes that cover this topic.....and they are published on the Arizona Game & Fish website.

Find your answer in writing.

Thanks gentlemen for the comeback.Ive tried to find Taxidermy laws on line here and very little info seems available. However Im gonna try and get to the bottom of this.Personally   I cant understand what a dead fish can do to harm another state.I'm sure their is a scientific reason, disease and etc.Trying to build a small display and replace a customers perch.Doesn't seem worth the effort and repro is out of question.

Hey round, sorry, but I doubt you'll get much help here on state laws. They vary from state to state, DUH! In Ga., I'm told it's illegal to buy or sell fish without a permit. Wouldn't it be nice if mckinzie-net would start a section on game laws just to help out taxis? Just think how it would help sell supplies. I would buy 2 or 3 bears now if I only knew how to go about it legally. Then, the forms, eyes ears and so forth. I guess they would have to have full time lawyers to get it all right.

just curious, but why is a repro out? You can probably do much better matching the original fish's markings on a repro than another fish skin that wont have the same markings. Either way it's not the same fish right? Expense is probably pretty similar, assuming you are passing the cost of replacement fish onto customer. Especially since you seem pretty concerned with the legality. No problem like that with a repro. I think most states are going to have laws against selling wild caught fish. Selling wild fish requires commercial fishing permits and such. Farm fish are generally able to be bought, but then again say you are in a state with VHS, other states may not allow import from that state even if its farm raised. Repro sounds much nicer lol

Fozzie, why is it that in MI it is illegal to sell a fish for purpose of taxidermy. As far as the state (DNR) is concerned, fish taxidermists don't exist.

I guess that is something to research.

its  just what I've heard I guess. like already stated

license to SELL fish......again as usual I have NOT
done my homework on this issue yet.
