I'm going to be doing my first splash scene and I was reading over the mixing instructions. They say to mix by weight. Is there a volume mix formula?

Different resins require different specifications. There is no one way fits all method. If the resin you are using says mix by weight then my all means thats what you do. A digital gram scale is what you need. Escali has many to choose from and most are pretty cheap. Google them. You'll find what you need.

You can use volume measurements when mixing Polytranspar Artificial Water. There is a handy chart showing the quantities of catalyst for different amounts on page 195 of the 2012 WASCO Catalog. 1-1/2% is a good starting point for most applications.

You can use any Scenery resin to make splashes.  You will need to get some gel promoter... From WASCO!. Next, fill a tote with luke warm water and float wax paper on the water. Make sure the wax paper has some water on top and is floating. Fill a Dixie cup half way with resin and use about 10 to 15 drops of reg 9%mekp and stir. Now, comes the tricky part...gel promoter....add about 4 drops of gel promoter and stir fast and get ready to pour on top of the wax paper. Pour thin lines or wide lines on the wax paper or however you want your splashes to be.  It takes trial and error on the gel promoter as in how much to use. It does not take much!!! When your splashes are cured they will be cloudy from the water. Set them out on a wood grate to dry.  At this point you can break them to the size you want. Add them to your scene and any fish gloss will bring them back crystal clear from handling them!   Hope this helps!!!

Practice and experiment alot. Keep notes of quantities and setup times and you will be pro before you know it.

I had to request a WASCO cataloge the last time I placed a McKenzie order as well as a Van Dyke.  They are nice to have and offer some different stuff that the normal McKenzie cataloge dont have.
