Years ago I decided tanning wasn't for me, it wasn't how I wanted to spend my taxidermy time. Therefore I know just enough about it to be dangerous while playing tannery roulette!
My question is, is there an advantage or valid reason why hides aren't fully neutralized? Spray them with a little water and baking soda and it sounds like an Alka-Seltzer, and at times my hands somewhat burn while working with them. Why would a reputable tannery do it this way? (And yes, reputable, one of the "top 3" tanneries).
What have I missed?

Your liver is probably pickled by now with all of that tannery acid being absorbed into your system.

That SHOULD NOT HAPPEN!
If it fizzes, its not even close to being neutralised!
That will happen alot with alum tans, because they are a MOTHER to neutralise.
Something so basic in tanning??? Shocked

Probably because they mismanage that process...and send them to us anyway. Nice.

In the end, "tannery roulette" will be the answer to my question. I suspected as much.

My intent here was not to point a finger at any one tannery (they WILL remain unnamed, I will use them again), but just to make this very point. Thanx Bill.
