You will probably get a dozen different answers but my personal favorite is an Iwata HPB. Works great for bird work and is capable
of some very fine detail work. JMO.

I have used the Iwata HP-B for over 25 years now and it's an excellent airbrush. I've also found that the new Badger Renegade series are very comparable to the HP airbrushes, but cost a bit less. I would not hesitate to recommend them and in fact just ordered a Renegade Jet myself.  I'm replacing the Renegade Velocity that I had and IMO has too large a paint cup for my taste.

Contact Paul Borowski(Pescado on this site) at Blue Ribbon Taxidermy Supply. He can set you up with what you need. Just make sure that you get an airbrush with a .20mm tip

of does that iwata work well with acrylics? since switching from laquers its been a pain to keep passhes to spray clean and consistent....the new wildlife colors seem to be better than the hydromist.....you still use laquer

I'm still using the lacquers, after trying to change over to water base a couple times. The key with the smaller tip detail airbrushes is to use retarder and cut your air pressure back. Pescado has the Woods and Waters waterbase paints that he says are airbrush ready, you might want to give them a try. The term "acrylic" can be applied to either water or lacquer "based" paint. Acrylic refers to the polymer pigment suspension, not the base.

yeah not acrylic laquers but the water based....I simply had to give up laquers for health......maybe I need a lower pressure...still spraying with 60 psi that I used with laq...the wildlife colors are a.b. ready to and have nice thick bases good coverage....the lifetone hydromist worked ok for a couple months then would settle out and harden tossed them out

I have two airbrushes.  Both Iwata.  My first is a Iwata HP-B.  It does do everything I want.  I also recently bought a back up.  I just picked up an Iwata Neo with the .35 mm needle.  I have to say for the price it is great.  the clean is very easy and fast.  The spray is very even and easy to control.  For waterfowl, if you do not want to spend  $300 on the HP-B, the Neo is $60 and should handle what you want it for.

You can often find HP-B Iwatas on Ebay for under $100. I bought an HP-A(not recommended for taxidermy) for under $60. I only use it for painting in real tight spaces, not general use.
