FIRST COYOTE MOUNT: QUESTIONS
«
on:
January 27, 2012, 08:12:03 PM »
I'm gonna be mounting a coyote soon; my first one. I have an idea of the supplies I'm gonna need, but I'd like a good list from more experienced taxidermists just to make sure I have everything.
Don't worry about posting fleshing/tanning supplies.
One more thing: does anyone know where I can find a relatively cheap coyote mannikin, preferably in a running pose? McKenzie, WASCO, Van Dykes and others have good mannikins, but I want to see if anyone knows where I can get one cheaper (again, preferably in a running pose).
Thanks alot!!!

I guarantee no on eis going to just run through a list of everything you will need. Research goes a long way! I too am a beginner and have been able to find everything I need by going through the archives and just like stated before, by looking a websites and catalogs.

Well, somebody gave me a list in the Lifesize Mammals section. So I'm good.
By the way, I already get catalogs from WASCO, Van Dykes, Jonas, and others. I just wanted to know if someone had a list made from their own experience.

Dan Chase has cheaper forms and they have nice detail too, we use them alot and our customers are always happy, they have more lifesize poses too. They are part of Second to Nature, look them up.

As a beginner, you'd be wise to avoid CHEAP forms as they cost you more in repairs and alterations than a quality manikin.

No, I'm planning on getting into taxidermy as a career after high-school (I'm finishing my Junior year), so I'm practicing as much as I can now. I bought a coyote hide from Apache1 and I'm waiting for it to come in the mail.
As for the mannikin, I think I found what I'll be buying - the McKenzie CY-V9-OM. It's an open-mouthed right-turn, and exactly what I need.

Make sure your hide measurements are correct for that type of form or you will have to alter it to fit the skin.

God I hope not. You need to use your junior and senior year in high school to educate yourself. Trying to support yourself in today's world with only taxidermy as a job opportunity out of high school is depressing. You haven't a clue as to the drudgery you'll have to endure for years in order to become competent enough to charge AND GET the money it will take to live with some degree of comfort. This is a "luxury" industry and the world according to Obama promises that luxuries are going to be fewer and fewer for the average working stiff. If you don't think you can muster the high-tech industries, I'd suggest HVAC as that's become a necessity.

No. I also have A LOT of experience in video editing, visual effects, graphic design, filmmaking, 3d modeling and animating, photo editing, and photography. Lots of experience in the media arts to provide income as well.
I actually made a 7-minute commercial last summer for Reising Ethington, a patent law firm, for a sort of job show they were participating in.
