I rarely squirrel hunt or really pay any attention to squirrels when I see them but while in between wood duck hunting I spot a big red colored squirrel and shoot him. It turns out to have a white face and black on top of his head. The guy I was with is saying this is a batchmans squirrel and that they are rare. Some others are claiming it is a blaze faced fox squirrel and they are fairly common. So does anyone really know what this is and if they are common or not?

Bachmans Fox squirrel. They're pretty common on the northshore where there's lots of pines. I'm in Hammond and I see them from time to time around the house. Where did you kill it?

thnaks guys, Im going to say bachmans. The bachmans on google images throw me off because some have white paws and ears and are more red looking. Mine is a female so I guess that would explain why it's alittle less radically colored. We killed it in Bush LA . We have a killer wood duck hole there and you can pretty much shoot fox squirrels allday but the drive isn't worth it to me for a squirrel. Now ducks is a diferent story.

Hey I have an idea! The next time you see something that looks neat while hunting ducks why not make a positive ID then shoot it? Assuming your supposed to be hunting that species. I like the "I heard there pretty rare part". JEEZ!!!!

I could be mean here but im not. All im going to say is squirrel season is open here no matter what species of squirrel. It was shot for a fox squirrel, again which is legal to take here. I dont see you trolling all the Duck Id posts in which every duck is dead and obviously not properly Id'd at the time taken. The squirrel is dead now and always will be so I'd quit worrying about it.

I think he made a positive ID before he shot. He said it was a squirrel.
How many duck and geese are pictured that are crossbreeds that no one has a clue what they are?

I've never seen a squirrel like that!  I've seen grey's and a few fox squirrel.  It's even rare to see a fox squirrel around here.  One neat looking squirrel that's for sure!
