i have some beautiful skins i recently acquired from the mid-1960s, and am in the process of mounting one of them (a red fox).
problem is for whatever reason (i'm assuming age) the pelt tears VERY easy and i'm having issues stretching/sewing the pelt without it tearing or the threads ripping out.
anything i can use to make this work or am i up crap creek without a paddle?

Perhaps acid rot. If it can't be sewn, serious hidepaste and pins. Good luck.

Alter and make the form smaller, so you are not using the thread to since the skin closed, you want the edges to fall together without having to pull them together. And buy fresh skins next time, leave the old crap at someone else's home.

Stop Rot,,use it or lose it.

i already altered the form... i'll try glue, and trust me, he's already looking like a pin cushion.
the key word in buying fresh skins is 'buying'; i'd rather practice mounting on a free one. Wink
when i'm pro and rich i'll buy skins so fresh they'll still be moving! (haaa.)

Your "free" one is going to cost more than its worth. No skin that old can be RELIABLY mounted without taking a chance it will disintegrate.  You need to give yourself a chance to learn taxidermy before trying to learn how to salvage a trashed skin. Get some fresh animals.
