Labrador duck cross shot! anyone read this.....coast of novia scotia a hunter shot a duck believed to either be a labrador duck or some kind of cross with a labrador...www.httpMTV&o=kw&q1672&src...canadian authorities have confiscated it and are dne testing it

read it on a canadien news site.shot by huinter is being tested for reccesive genes of labrador duck....they said some are thought to remain in captivity in soviet union

Cool beans if this is a true story.
Regardless though, the Soviet Union doesn't have any, as it collapsed in 1991  Grin Now Russia, that's another story.

You can get a labrador duck by crossing a white mallard, scooter and red breasted merganser, Just look in the latest breakthrough Wink

I think it is extremely unlikely that the bird will turn out to be a hybrid.
By now, even giving it the benefit of the doubt by assuming that there were fertile hybrids at one time, it has been about 150 years since the original species died out.
Those hybrids, IF they were able to breed successfully, (BIG if!) would have had to cross with some other genetically compatible and more abundant species, like scoters or eiders. There would have been no Labrador ducks to "refresh" the crosses, so the hybrid offspring would have no choice but to breed with more eiders or scoters.
After more than 100 generations there would be no visible trace of any Labrador duck genes.

A more likely situation might be a recent hybrid between a goldeneye and an eider - if such a thing is possible.
Such a cross could conceivably resemble a Labrador duck.
