How is the method of mounting a deer head with a short back of the neck cut so one does not have to sew the hole neck cut?

You can check the archives for this. A short answer is that when you skin a short y incision, you remove the skull thru the back of the neck.
When mounting, slip the hide over the form leaving the head out. At this point set your eyes and antlers. Finish slipping hide over the face and continue with the rest.

Has its pros and cons. I prefer to cut all the way down the back for 3 reasons. 1 after the hide is tanned it can be laid flat and I feel I can get the most accurate measurements for the mannikin, 2 it just seems 2 me that it is easier to taxi the skin everywhere to show the muscle definition more easy, and 3 you don't have to use so much brute force to stretch the hide over the form. But I have used both methods, just prefer to cut down the back, with a little practice the stitching is easy, doesn't take very long and you will never see it.
