I get what he is saying, just not sure why he doesn't use 10 punches for a "0".
When he counts his punches he starts with zero, so * * * is "zero, one, two". Basically he subtracts one from each line. Too much math for me, I'll stick to 10 punches equals zero.

ok yeah I see what hes saying now too. Im not sure I would do it that way, but at least it works for him. I just run my own numbers and leave a space for the odd zero that comes along, like a gap in the sequence. But again, its easier for me as I have the plastic tag backing me up.

I became a taxidermist to avoid math. Now it seems math has found me again, damn.

ive sent probably about 150 or more capes to wildlife gallery in the past 5 years.. only had 3 ever come back without plactic tags in the ears.. and the zip ties were still there, just tag missing..
and out of the 3, one 2 were in the same box, but were totally different sizes so i knew right away whos was whos...
starting now, im going to start punching hides because i dont want to be in a pickle.
I used to send 5-10 capes at a time... now im sending 50-75/yr in 2-3 shipments, so its more to worry about and harder to find out whos is whos if it were to happen..

Like almiost everybody else Dougs way is to complicated for me. When I have a zero show up in the order number I just use a scalple and put a slice where the zero belongs in the code that is a whole lot easier than punching 10 holes for just one zero.
2035 would look like this

I just do 4 plus 5 together. For example, with my space for zero, lets try 2309...
** 2
*** 3

* * 0

***** 9
