Been waiting to kill a sandhill crane for the last 4 yrs.  Finally went after them this yr. in the panhandle of Texas.  Tough hunt but left with one.  Cool!! Cant wait to try that ribeye in the sky. Grin  Long story short, I was going thru the freezer the other day and came across a bag that I thought contained an old duck carcass.  In haste I tossed in the trash.  That was thursday.  Last night while laying in bed at the fire station it hit me, oh no that wasn't a carcass at all, it was ribeye in the sky!!! Embarrassed Cry  Oh no my wife is going to kill me!!  About 10 min. ago she asked, "honey what would you like for dinner?  Elk, goose, duck, or Crane?" I just quivered inside and suggested deer sausage and shrimp paella.  I don't know how I am going to break this to her.  She is so excited about eating that crane that was killed on our anniversary.  Oh man, my goose is cooked. Angry  Anyone got a couple crane breasts  they are willing to part with?Huh   Huh Huh  Seriously, crane meat, anyone? Wink

Well they say crane is ribeye in the sky and speckle belly geese are filet mignon.   May just try to serve the goose instead and call it crane.   Yes labeling bags is handy!

OK you are not in trouble have eaten Crane its how you cook it that matters just cook like a goose and eat it. say the recipe was one you never tried before and two things happen, you get to go again and get another one and try a new recipe or she says no when you tell you are going. that is what i would do she will never be able to tell oh by the way crane is really really good done the right way

Nah,  she won't be to mad.   We were just really looking forward to the crane.   My wife is a gourmet home chef and she had big plans for that bird.    Oh well, there are worse things........

I would go buy a boneless ribeye, and prepare it for her. She shouldn't argue the point that it tastes like ribeye? Smiley

Lying to your wife is NEVER a good idea. Just tell her the truth and she will think more of you as a man. Take her with you next time you go for cranes even if she does not want to shoot one.

I am not really going to lie to her and she won't really be mad at me.  It is more of a mad at myself rant.  I will tell her and she will say your kidding, you threw away our crane. Oh well, we will have to kill another one, and next time you will label the bag, dummy!   She's a good woman!
