Hello All.......I am new to the forum and am just starting to learn taxidermy. Last night I skinned my first raccoon which will be my first mount. When I got to his ears I looked for the base of the ear canal, thought I found it and cut.....big mistake as it was not the ear canal but the base of the ear itself. Have I totally messed him up or can I fix the ear? I was able to get the other ear with no problems (well my husband was able to because I was to worried I would cut the other ear! lol) The ear is so thin, is it even fixable? If so what do I do? Any advice would to very appreciated!

Hello CharlaB, welcome to the forum.  The ear canal attachment is much deeper than you thought, more along the side of the skull above the mandible attachment.  As long as you didn't cut the outer ear skin, you should be OK but without seeing it there's no way to tell for sure.  You should practice skinning more mammals to be confident in doing it properly.  It comes with experience like anything.  The inner ear skin will be adhered to your earliner so you can blend the junction between the two with Apoxie Sculpt anyway.  I would leave the cartilage in the ear and use an earliner that's made for placement between the cartilage and the skin on the back of the ear.  One type that comes to mind is the earliner sold by Brian Harness of Ozark Woods.  Call him at 800-467-0369 for his product catalog.  If I were you, I'd get his video on mounting a raccoon if you don't already have it: https://www.taxidermytrainingunlimited.com/BH-Raccoon.html .  It doesn't include the skinning process but you'll gain a better understanding of how the ear mounting process works.  Let us know how you do.

Charla, your mistake is a common one for beginners and even some of us a bit "seasoned".  I encourage beginners to skin the head out using both hands- one inside the skin and the other with the scalpel.  If you press "inside" finger and press itdown inside the ear canal, you'll eliminate this mistake as your fingers will give you a "depth perception".  Many times your eyes can convince you that you're deep enoughwhen you're not. Your fingers won't buy into that.

John - I will defiantly check out the video!

George - Great idea, you are right my fingers would have told me I was to close to the base.

I have skinned deer before but never with the thought of saving the hide, trying to preserve the hide makes skinning so much harder. But I don't give up easy......

Thanks guys!
