SO this weekend I am giving ear liners a shot for the first time.  I have always used bondo method, but can never get the thin crisp ears that the ear liners give.  I got McKenzie liners and a set of the McKenzie ears forward butts.  My question is what is the preffered way of securing the butts to the deer form??  Balling up some clay and pressing butts into it?  I am open to all suggestions!  Thanks

I drill and counter sink a hole in the ear butt and screw a dry wall screw to screw it onto the form. Use a little clay to smooth out the edges.

When I used those I cut the entire butt off and built the entire butt out of clay. That way it didn't lock me into a single ear posture.

I just got liners for my doe, since I wanted two different positions for her ears.  Made the butts from clay.  Just make sure to rough up the surface of the ear liner so the hide paste has something to "grab" onto, lol.  There's a good tutorial by Nina that I got a lot of information from:  http://www.taxidermy.net/forum/index.php/topic,89728.0.html

I just had the same experience. I debated on how to secure them to the form and to the liner. I didn't use them I used clay.
The proper method would no doubt produce a great looking Butt, but it seams to be allot of effort.
The Butts I had would have been to short also and would have required clay work to correct that any way.

A rope of clay the width of a cigarette around the base of the plastic butt will work.

Jdewitt are you talking about the ear liners and butts that are separate or the ones that are liner and butt that are one piece? I was talking about how I attach the 360 ear butts that are separate from the liners. The one piece liner/butt a ring of clay is the ticket. I have switched to clay butts for reasons that were mentioned by others on this thread.

I just used them for the first time myself. i didn't screw them to the form i used the clay Like Mr.T described just in case i needed to reposition the ears a little, which I did. I think with clay butts you have more options, you are not locked in to one position.

Thanks everyone for the help.  I was thinking if I couldn't figure it out I would just build the butts from clay.....I think its going to be a game time decision haha.
